In order to support the war effort the US government sold war bonds for $18.75 a piece, which would be bought back for $50 ten years later. Larger denominations were also available in $1000 and 85 cent saving stamps were also sold to those who wanted to save up for a bond. 185 million Americans bought war bonds for a total amount of $185 billion.
