During WWII the Nazi party and military units known as the Kunstschutz (e. art protection) conducted systematic plundering of valuables from minorities they suppressed and every territory they occupied. Everything of value was taken, from gold, silver and currency, to art or cultural and religious objects. Even today, Nazi plunder is identified and returned to the rightful owners, but there is still much unaccounted for.
