During WWII the Japanese military had prepared against a large scale Soviet attack. The Japanese knew that they could never match the Soviet forces, both in manpower and equipment, and trained their soldiers in tactics that could counter these advantages, for example, by attacking at night, in the evening or in the early morning. The Soviet forces never executed a large scale attack on Japan but the Japanese could nevertheless use these tactics to their advantage against the Allies in the Pacific War.
