British Commandos, 1942.
Many raids were conducted by the British armed forces during WWII, mostly by the British commando forces. Most of the raids were against the Atlantic Wall, which was an extensive defense system and fortifications built by the Axis along the coast of continental Europe and Scandinavia. A total of 57 raids were conducted between 1940 and 1944 by the commandos, most of them against targets in France, but also Norway, the Channel Islands, Belgium and the Netherlands. Many of the raids resulted in the capture or death of all commandos involved, but many were successful, for example, Operation Chariot which was a raid against dock installations at Saint-Nazaire in France and has since been called “The Greatest Raid of All Time”.
