Although the Americans did not possess the largest military force during WWII, they managed to assemble a large fighting force in a short period of time. From the year 1939 to 1945 the US military personnel grew from 334,473 to 12,209,238 members. Of these men and women 38.8% (6,332,000) were volunteers and 61.2% (11,535,000) were draftees.
