The Grumman F4F Wildcat was an American carrier-based fighter aircraft used in WWII by the United States Navy and the British Royal Navy. The Wildcat was the most effective fighter available to the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater up until 1942. It had a top speed of 512 km/h (318 mph), and although it was outperformed by longer-ranged Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it performed well and had a kill ratio of 6.9:1. Throughout the war 7,885 Wildcats were built, including a few variants.
