The 8th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army was formed in 1866 during the American Indian Wars. During WWII the regiment saw combat in the Pacific Theater and participated in the Manus Island invasion and the Leyte invasion in 1944 and in 1945 they pushed towards the northern outskirts of Manila along with the 1st Cavalry Division. After the Japanese surrendered, the regiment was given the responsibility of occupying the entire city of Tokyo along with the 1st Division.
