In 1944 most Japanese politicians and military commanders had realized that they would not gain the victory they had hoped for at the start of the war. However, many militarists wanted to continue the fight, even after the atomic bombs were dropped, in the hopes that they could negotiate the terms for peace and keep some of their conquered territories in Asia. They hoped that a continued loss of American and Allied lives would persuade the Americans to negotiate for a truce. Japanese soldiers were ordered to fight to the last while defending the remaining islands in the Pacific, and in October 1944, the first kamikaze attack took place. What followed was a wave of suicide attacks on Allied targets and the bloodiest battles of WWII.
