The 48th Infantry Regiment was part of the 21st Infantry Division of the Seventh French Army. When Germany invaded France the Seventh Army was under the command of General Henri Giraud. When combat commenced it became the 1st Army Group and was deployed to northern Belgium where it participated in heavy fighting against the German forces. The 1st Army Group retreated to France, where it again became the Seventh Army and continued the fighting until the armistice on June 25, 1940.
