Background

Hist 2e BRIGADE

1st Free French Division during Battle of Bir Hakeim in Libya, 1942.

The 2nd Brigade was part of the 1st Free French Division during WWII and consisted of soldiers from mainland France and the French colonies. The division was formed in the summer of 1940 and was one of the first French units to rally to De Gaulle and Free French forces. The 2nd Brigade fought with the 1st Free French Division in numerous battles and campaigns throughout the war, both in North Africa and Europe, for which it became one of the most decorated French divisions of WWII.
