The 1st Airlanding Brigade was an airborne infantry brigade of the British Army during WWII and the glider infantry formation assigned to the 1st Airborne Division. The brigade only participated in combat on two occasions, in Operation Ladbroke during the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, and in Operation Market Garden in 1944. During Operation Market Garden the 1st Airlanding Brigade along with the rest of 1st Airborne Division held out against overwhelming German odds and suffered heavy losses. Of the 2,526 men of 1st Airlanding Brigade that left England for Operation Market Garden 230 were killed, 476 evacuated and 1,822 were missing or prisoners of war. After the surrender of Germany in 1945, the brigade was sent to Norway to disarm a German garrison and shortly after it was disbanded.
